Board Member of the Year Shortlist Chris Barratt Gatehouse of Fleet Barbara Brown Solway Credit Union John Simpson Auchencairn Community Council Chris recognised a need within the community for community participatory groups working in an intergenerational way. Gatehouse of Fleet has the highest percentage of retired people in the Dumfries and Galloway region. With transportation issues it meant that many people were unable to access groups and participatory events. He has taken this idea, whilst holding two other jobs and created a fantastic

voluntary group which now has 14 community projects serving every age group within the community . Barbara is the longest serving member of the board, having been on the board for the past 18 years. She is totally reliable, volunteers to help in a variety of ways, turns up at a moment's notice when the staff require a Director's input. She gives time each week to make sure that loan applications are assessed and processed as quickly as possible for those who need a loan, and undertakes whatever it takes to help the credit union fulfil its pledge to be a financial institution available to all. John has become a vital, positive and constructive force in the village. Always encouraging, always seeking solutions he brings a spirit of

optimism to any issue or project and is a cheerful presence at any event he is involved in. It is said that outstanding leaders show unwarranted optimism, an absence of paranoia, and that they regard complexity as fun and crisis as the norm. Dumfries and Galloway Blood Bikes Leonard Cheshire Organisation The service is provided free of charge to the NHS, Dumfries and Galloway and has no paid members of staff. All volunteers provide their time free of charge with only minimal expenses paid. We have no operating centre as all members work from home, again to keep costs to the bare minimum, every penny raised is for the patients. Many of our volunteers have some disability themselves, such as multiple sclerosis, stroke or infirmity through age but volunteering with us gives them amazing satisfaction by making such an essential contribution. Whilst volunteers do not seek awards or plaudits, the charity does recognise the importance of acknowledging what they mean to us by way of hosting volunteer social gatherings, coffee meetings, marking Birthdays and Christmas lunches. Alzheimer Scotland

Dumfries and Galloway Housing Partnership Living with dementia and caring for someone with dementia can be a very isolating experience. Our volunteers bring their skills, their friendship and their care to all aspects of the services we provide which in turns breaks down barriers and stigma, which hopefully brings happiness and smiles to people who are having a real difficult time.
