A Theory and the Two Most Important Things 4 The Role of Perception Defined by as. 1. the act or faculty of perceiving, or apprehending by means of the senses or of the mind; cognition; understanding.

2. immediate or intuitive recognition or appreciation, as of moral, psychological, or aesthetic qualities; insight; intuition; discernment: an artist of rare perception. 3. the result or product of perceiving, as distinguished from the act of perceiving; percept. 4. Psychology. a single unified awareness derived from sensory processes while a stimulus is present. 5 Language What is the purpose of language?

Ultimately we perceive the world we live in with our language In English we perceive our world being made up of objects. We use verbs to describe the things these object are doing or having done to them. In our language there is a subject, which acts upon an object, which exists independently of the subject. In English, independent entities (subjects and objects) are primary, rather than processes or relationships. This is not true for all languages. 6

Interpretation Example (Language) Employees regularly scheduled to work an average of twenty-five (25) or more hours per week but less than forty (40) hours per week shall be considered regular part-time employees and shall be eligible for the minimum pay rate described herein. Regular part-time employees shall not be entitled to the fringe benefits afforded in this Agreement but shall have access to the grievance procedure. County Education Association shall remain in full force and effect through June 30, 2019 except for Article 13. Article 14 may be opened each year if it is mutually agreed. habit and addiction? Tobacco? Alcohol? Culture is transmitted, through language, material objects, ritual, institutions, and art, from one

generation to the next. 15 The writer W. Somerset Maugham felt that culture creates the person. He wrote: It is very difficult to know people. For men and women are not only themselves, they are also the region in which they are born, the city apartment or the farm in which they learned to walk, the games they played as children, the old wives' tales they overheard, the food they ate, the schools they

attended, the sports they followed, the poets they read, and the God they believed in. You can know them only if you are them. 16 Beliefs Merriam Webster defines beliefs as a feeling of being sure that someone or something exists or that something is true a feeling that something is good, right, or valuable a feeling of trust in the worth or ability of someone

Learning Experiences Research done by neuroscience Joel Winston and Matt Lieberman (University of California) reported in 2005 in The Guardian that learning experiences are at the top of the list for developing personal beliefs In addition, experiences need not be personal. Things that happen to friends and family can also help shape beliefs 18 Keys to Success

Communication Talking to administrators, managers, teachers, parents, students, community members, etc. No different than speaking to players, coaches, parents, scorekeepers, penalty box operators, schedulers, other officials/umpires media personnel Flexibility Awareness is key Game management

Not always about cut and dry/black and white rules. Often there is a middle answer. Negotiations (its not just for union contracts anymore) Negotiations Give and take Frame your position Not just with unions might be in the hiring process (be honest, be a salesman) Officiating / Managing / Coaching Sell your call / play Communicating your rationale Calling of penalties, balls and strikes / writing up employees /

benching a player (its all the same) 21 Media/Non-management Personnel/Parents/Public As a leader (coach, umpire, player, official, media member), every decision or move you make WILL be scrutinized and questioned. Are you prepared for it? How will you handle the criticism?

22 Social Media Friend or enemy? On the plus (+) side: Can be a great recruiting tool Can get information out quickly and efficiently (delays, news, etc.) Can help you stay in touch with students, parents, family members, clubs, etc. On the minus (-) side:

23 24 HR Functions/Concepts Understand that non-HR people (teachers, managers, supervisors) may never fully understand HR concepts and issues that are handled by HR: Compensatory time, flex time, etc. Exempt vs. nonexempt Job classification systems Interviewing

FMLA/ADA and other compliance issues Coaches and players dont fully understand the rulebooks either. People not in the media dont know what goes on behind the scenes. Rules/Contracts/Handbooks often require complex interpretations 25 On a lighter note: Things Ive learned in HR and in sports: 1. People do really stupid things.

2. Most people expect exceptions to the rules. 3. People want answers without asking any questions. 3b. People dont ask the right questions. 4. Everyone has a story. 5. Most policies/rules arent foolproof. People seek out the loopholes and attempt to take full advantage of them. 6. Decisions, decisions! Not everyone is a good decision-maker. Thats a HUGE opportunity for those who are. 7. Adults often act like children. You should probably still treat them like adults. 26
