Anatomy of an Atom Model of the atom.

Every element in the periodic table is made of a single atom, unique to the element. An atom is mostly empty space with a dense inner mass found in the nucleus. Sub-atomic particles called protons and neutrons are found within its nucleus. The mass of one proton approximately equals the mass of one neutron. Relative to an electric charge, protons have a positive charge and neutrons have a neutral charge. Orbiting the nucleus of the atom are electrons. They are found in specific orbital levels (shells) around the nucleus.

Electrons have a negative electrical charge. Continued Even though electrons are much smaller in mass to a proton or neutron, the negative electrical charge og one electron equals the positive electrical charge of one proton. Periodic Table

The modern periodic table is built on the concept of atomic number of each element. Elements increase from lowest to highest based on their atomic number. Atomic Number
